About Kim Guthrie

Kim Guthrie Kim Guthrie “Whimsical art for the young at heart!” is my artist motto. It’s the thread that runs through my multiple styles, whether realism or impressionism. I constantly challenge myself with new themes and mediums, as if giving myself school assignments. This motivates me and gives me deadlines for creating art for multiple shows and for my unconventional downtown McKinney,Texas studio. I'm mainly a painter, using bright colors and an array of palette knives to move the buttery paint in organic strokes. This love of texture spills over to 3D sculptures I design and erect using paper mache and vintage finds. Please come visit my Virginia Street studio/gallery! With its two large, street-level windows and streaming natural light, it’s my dream space! I so enjoy sitting there, sculpting or painting, as people peer in at me, as if my whimsical paper mache animal sculptures and I are in a zoo! My studio fills me with lots of delightful unexpected moments — like the evening I was teaching a private lesson, and my student and I suddenly realized we had an entire sidewalk crowd watching! Beyond teaching, I do a lot of commission projects. Many artists say they have to find motivation to start a project. But I have to slow myself down, because I have so many ideas! I rely on prayer, intercession, and a gut feeling to decide where to start. Through God-given talent, hard work, hustle, and honest business practices, I have been blessed to be a self-sustaining, professional artist for the last 30+ years. As a kid I remember my dad saying that the only way for women to financially make it was to become a secretary. His words motivated me to prove him wrong, because a cubicle job is not for me! I am happiest when I am creating; it’s when I feel closest to my Creator and my true self!
